Step by step
- Open Settings → Wallpaper and locate the current wallpaper pair.
- Tap Customize beneath the Home Screen preview on the right—not beneath the Lock Screen on the left.
- To keep the paired image but make it sharper, tap Blur to switch the effect off. We checked both the blurred and unblurred previews with the puppy image.
- For a simpler background, tap Color. In our test, iOS offered a warm color that complemented the puppy image and removed the photo from the Home Screen preview.
- Tap Done at the top. Return to the actual Home Screen and confirm the new appearance behind your app icons.
- Check the Lock Screen too. Our test kept the puppy on the Lock Screen while the Home Screen used the selected solid color.
What we actually tested
On October 9, 2026, we opened Home Screen Customize on a physical iPhone 16 Pro Max running iOS 27.0, switched Blur off, selected Color, tapped Done, and verified the actual Home Screen. The puppy Lock Screen remained unchanged. The Photo and Gradient options were visible, but selecting a separate photo and gradient was not part of this test.
Choose the right Customize button
The two previews have separate Customize controls. Use the one beneath the Home Screen to change the background behind app icons. Editing the Lock Screen side is a different flow and is not needed for these changes.
Switch back to an existing pair
In Settings → Wallpaper, browse the saved pairs until you see the one you want, then tap Set as Current. We used this to restore the original pair after testing, without deleting or editing it. This switches the whole pair, rather than undoing just one Home Screen edit.
